Why is it that I'm receiving this message as I've been a customer for
the last several years:

502 Permission Denied - Service restricted to EarthLink member networks
- ***@EarthLink.Net (Tornado v1.0.5.360)

Configuration:
Account: news.west.earthlink.net
Server: news.east.earthlink.net
User name: ***@earthlink.net
Protocol: NNTP
Port: 119
Secure(SSL): 0
Error Number: 502
Code: 800ccca0

I get this from time-to-time.

Also, why bother putting up a newsgroup support page on earthlink using
newsgroups when you can't get to them????

The error message contains the reason. Read it carefully. You are
trying to access their servers while on a non-Earthlink network, e.g.,
from your workplace or a hotel, etc. They have a connection
restriction that denies access to any computer not connected through
Earthlink. Dial-up to Earthlink or try from your home Earthlink
broadband and you will be OK, but otherwise you are hosed.

Possibly. But more likely the OP is doing what he's been doing for some
time.
There have been reports of news.east having authentication problems,
wherein it "forgets" what network addresses are allowed.
Have a look at recent reports in earthlink.support.usenet for the sketchy
details. Problem still ongoing to some degree.

There's zero staff to solve any problems.

I've got to disagree here. I have never even once accessed my Earthlink
account anywhere except home using my Earthlink DSL connection. Yet over
75% of the time I try to read usenet news, I got this error. The problem
has been cut to about 25% now that I've removed my home network and taken
the modem out of bridge mode, but I still frequently have troubles.

I'm assuming that you are actually on what is supposed to be an
authorized connection.

If this hasn't resolved itself yet, post the details in the ELNK
newsgroup earthlink.support.usenet to the attention of Av (who is the
only person who does most of the news server work).

He's about the only person who can do anything about the problem if
it's a reassigned IP or something similar.
